Jazz Boricua Trio strikes up at 08:00p.m.

The 2007-2008 Performing Arts Season at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College will resume…with a traditional Mothers’ Day concert featuring the Jazz Boricua Trio out of Puerto Rico.
Lead performer for the Jazz Showcase is pianist Angel David Mattos, who will be accompanied by Aldemar Valentin on electric bass and Hector Matos on drums. The concert will be held at the Paraquita Bay Auditorium on Friday, May 9 starting 8:00 p.m. Mattos, 42, began his musical training from an early age, graduating with honours from the San Juan School of Music in 1984 before moving to mainland United States for advanced studies in music.
At the University of Illinois, Angel majored in Music Education and Jazz Piano Performance and graduated magna cum laude in 1988. Since then, he has performed in studio sessions and live performances with such major figures as Dave Valentin, Alex Acuña, Bob Mintzer, John Benitez and Mike Stern, among others.
David won the Berklee College of Music (Boston, Massachusetts) “Outstanding Musician” award in 1995, 1996 and 2000. He has also performed classical music and has given solo recitals in major theatres in Puerto Rico.
Angel is currently pianist for the Bayamon Symphony, with which he performs a unique version of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” by incorporating a Jazz trio with the piano cadenzas. He is also a member of the music faculty at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, where he teaches advanced Jazz classes and groups.
At around this time during every Performing Arts Season, the College appropriately dedicates its concert––and pays tribute––to all mothers in advance of Mother’s Day which will be celebrated on Sunday, May 11.
