Jordan has a duo recording with Brown, doesn’t she?

Do you know I have a thing for duos in all configurations, including Jazz with Classical - kind of a ‘Third Stream’ thing?

  • Vaughnette // January 15, 2008 at 9:03 am

Duos tend to bring out the best of each individual or style of music. In my repertoire I always included at least one song with guitar and voice and one with bass and voice.

You know what the next request is Vaughnette? You need to send me a clip of your music, even if it is 59 seconds long. Choose your format: MP3 or CD. Heck, DVD. Otherwise, you could put it on your website for all to see and hear.

  • Vaughnette // January 15, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Send me your address and I will send off a demo CD to you in the morning.

  • Israel // January 15, 2008 at 1:44 pm

    Now you talkin’.

And by the way, your music will be in titanium-safe hands.

    My address is listed above.

So whats going on in the BVI musicwise these days

  • Israel // January 15, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Not much right now in the line of Jazz, Blues and other improvisations.

However, just last weekend, the ‘Bud Light True Music Series Presents’ kicked off. This Blues series runs through mid-April.

The ‘Jazz Showcase’ given by the Community College of the BVI resumes at the College’s performance space later this month. I reviewed the first Jazz show by Steve Wilson last November on this site.

The annual ‘Jazz on the Hill’ Jazz Festival held on the ‘off-island’ of Virgin Gorda is due in May.

The local club scene though is quite stagnant. This is one of the reasons why I am setting up Woodshed Entertainment as I have explained before. The individual I am hoping to partner with on this venture pointed his index finger at me last Friday as if to tell me I should step on it.

I will be posting more on all of these issues - except for the last one - in just a few days from now.

Okay, I will be heading to SATCHMO’s this weekend so you will have your first write up and picture by Wednesday. I ‘ll try to catch a picture with me singing with Clive as well.

Great! I look forward to that.

  • Vaughnette // January 25, 2008 at 5:29 pm

    Ok Israel
First apology, the show carded for Sunday was postponed so I will be trying again for this Sunday.

  • Vaughnette // January 25, 2008 at 5:35 pm

The annual Plymouth Jazz Festival is carded for April 25 to 27, 2008. The artiste line-up has not been posted as yet so I cant give you any info on that. What I can tell you is that the Mt. Irvine Beach Facility is continuing with its drive to promote the local jazz scene during the festival time. A number of local jazz acts (including myself) have been booked for the SATURDAY and SUNDAY jazz brunch as a precursor to the bigger shows in the evening at Plymouth. We really look forward to this getting bigger and better.

  • Israel // January 25, 2008 at 5:46 pm

    That’s all good.

In the meantime, I will keep busy with stories on the Barbados Jazz Festival just gone, the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival now on, an upcoming USVI benefit concert by ’21st Century’ with Dion Parsons and Ron Blake, featuring Reuben Rogers and the Barbados Music Awards on Sunday 27th.

  • Israel // January 25, 2008 at 5:54 pm

I am happy to know that you are being recognised and are getting the gigs. I am sure you will tell us how that goes.

However, a few questions for you: What and who is Mt. Irvine Beach Facility? And do you have the actual schedule and artiste roster for the Jazz Brunch?

    Israel
Im off to Barbados this weekend for an interview with Arturo Valentino and to hook up with the Berklee faculty for a possible audition, will let you know how it went.

  • Israel // February 18, 2008 at 10:29 pm

That is really great news girl. I know Berklee has auditions in Bim off and on. I suppose it is one of those.

I am rooting for you, hoping that you get that full scholarship.

  • Vaughnette // February 26, 2008 at 10:48 pm

    Hey Israel
Back home man. Barbados is so beautiful. The audition went well (I think), will let you know more about that. Boy we have got to look out for some of these Bajan musicians. I was so impressed to see the young, energetic musicians. We need to listen out for saxophonist Nicholas Timothy and Vocalist Kellie Cadogan. These young people were featured as part of Musician Chris Harper’s “Cool Jazz Series”. They were great.

  • Vaughnette // February 26, 2008 at 10:51 pm

The Berklee Faculty members led by my online Instructor Pianist Russ Hoffmann was also featured on this show and they were great. They played great pieces and were eventually joined by Andre Woodvine and Chris Harper both on Alto Saxes playing a John Coltrane piece. Wow, I almost cried man. So great was the moment.

  • Israel // February 26, 2008 at 11:30 pm

I have been keeping an eye on the Caribzones site, which houses the Cool Jazz Series, for some time now. But the site tends to use brief captions and largely pictorial reviews. I am craving for more details girl!

Love to hear what’s next regarding your audition too of course. I trust you will let us in on the details soonest, right?

  • Vaughnette // February 27, 2008 at 10:20 pm

As soon as I get some feedback you’ll be the first to know. Well tell me what kind of details you’ll like to get, I am sure I can get Chris Harper to send you some more detailed information on each feature in the series.

  • Israel // February 27, 2008 at 10:53 pm

The short answer to your question: Names, Contact Info, and where possible, press kits, either in hard or electronic copy.

What I am doing behind the scenes Vaughnette is basically developing a database of all musicians and other industry persons of Caribbean origin for the bigger task of setting up the ‘project’ that I hinted to you earlier on.

In this regard, all I need right now is at least one reliable person who can provide me with the names and contact information of the Bajan Jazz musicians, recorded or not, as well as the contact info for the Jazz producers, promoters and Societies, if any.

Armed with this information, I aim to build a relationship with these folks on an individual basis, like what we have Vaughnette. In time, I hope that all of you can become the “Collective” who will feed the fans with details of your experiences and growth, your performance calendars and press kits - quite apart from providing a forum for commenting and chats.

I want this blog (and the webpage to come) to be a Jazz repository, whether or not I have to do it alone or work in tandem with other Jazz writers who may take up this concept of mine or create an online presence of their own.

  • Vaughnette // February 28, 2008 at 11:46 am

Well I can start to do that for you for the Trinidad side of it. I will ask Chris Harper contact you…………Be good

  • Israel // February 28, 2008 at 1:07 pm

One island at a time…easy does it…and we’ll all be completely interconnected in time.
Thanks for showing such interest and helping out the cause.

  • Vaughnette // February 28, 2008 at 3:40 pm

    Anytime ……….

  • Vaughnette // March 11, 2008 at 8:11 am

    Hey Israel
What a birthday present! I thank you so much for the great article. It was such a surprise.
    Thanks again.

  • Israel // March 11, 2008 at 8:52 am

You’re welcome. But see, I do my homework. And I do not need you to tell me what you’ve been up to. (lol)
