…a sampling of Jazz news deserving of a post rather than a roll, a blogroll

Over the last five days of March, the great septuagenarian saxophonist Charles Lloyd, one who back in the day, held court with artists who have since become Jazz legends (Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Keith Jarrett and many others) cut a swath through New Mexico, California and Washington for a series of concerts.
Since the 1960’s and for generations, Lloyd has courted Jazz Lions. For his recent tour, he pooled some of today’s upstarts, pianist Jason Moran, Moran’s high school classmate, drummer Eric Harland and (get this) bassist Reuben Rogers.
Rogers, a U.S. Virgin Islander, did not only gig with the master; he also recorded with him. The quartet’s live album Rabo de Nube (2007) was released earlier this year.
And were you aware that Rogers has been Aaron Goldberg’s bassist for ten years running? He was not, however, a part of Goldberg’s trio that showed up at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College’s Jazz Showcase in the British Virgin Islands March 28.
